If you have any questions that do not appear in the list below, send us a message using the contact form below.
You will have an initial consultation with a Driving Advisor and/or an Occupational Therapist. They will ask you for your consent to carry out the assessment. They will check your driving licence details and discuss any medical issues, limitations or problems you may have that could affect your driving ability.
Some simple physical checks will be carried out and where appropriate, a reaction time test and/or a 10 minute paper exercise to assess cognition (such as memory and concentration). We will ensure you meet the minimum legal eyesight requirements for driving. Please bring your spectacles if you need to wear them for reading and/or driving.
If you require an assessment to review your method of driving you will be given the opportunity to trial suitable vehicles including, where appropriate, adaptations to meet your needs. Your ability to control the vehicles and drive safely will be assessed on an off-road area, possibly progressing onto the public roads.
If you require an assessment to review your fitness to drive the assessment will start on an off-road area and progress onto public roads, covering no more than 15 miles. Following your drive we will advise you of our recommendations. It is recommended that you bring someone with you to the assessment who would be able to drive you home should you be advised to stop driving.
We carry out assessments for members of the public, the DVLA, Motability, Hampshire Constabulary, Solicitors and Insurance Companies. If your GP or Health Professional has recommended the assessment please note that the fee is payable by yourself.
You can complete our online application form by clicking the Apply Online tab or you can download a copy by clicking the Application tab and sending it to us in the post. Alternatively you can call the Centre on 02380 554100 for an application pack.
All the assessments are carried out in the Centre vehicles as they are fitted with dual controls as we have a duty of care to ensure the safety of our clients, staff members and the public.
However we have both manual and automatic cars, with a variety of vehicle adaptations. We realise that the car will be new to you, so time is allocated at the beginning of the on-road assessment for you to become familiar with the car.
If you wish to use your driving instructor’s car you may do so, as it will be fitted with a dual brake.
All assessments are carried out from our Centre as pre-determined routes are required for the drive.
- Spectacles if you need to wear them for reading and/or driving.
- A valid photo card driving licence if you have one. If you do not have one please bring proof of entitlement to drive and photographic ID. We will not be able to carry out an assessment without a valid licence.
- If possible, results of any cognitive testing undertaken within the last 12 months.
- Sensible footwear for driving along with appropriate attire as part of the assessment may be conducted outside.
You are encouraged to bring an accompanying person who can, if required, drive you home.
As all assessments at our Centre are carried out on UK roads, licence entitlement is required (either full or provisional). If your licence has been revoked by the DVLA or you have surrendered it, please contact the DVLA on 0300 790 6806.
We encourage you to come to the Centre accompanied, especially if you are electing to drive your own vehicle to the Centre. It is your choice whether your accompanying person is present during the initial consultation with you. Unfortunately however we cannot permit other persons to accompany you during the driving assessment.
You will be at the Centre for approximately 2 – 2.5 hours in total.
A few days after your assessment you will receive a report detailing out recommendations as given to you verbally on the day, along with other relevant information.
If you need to return to us for a follow up assessment within 3 months this is free of charge and yearly check up appointments are charged at half price. We are available to answer any follow up questions you may have, please contact the Centre to discuss.
The assessment team will enclose with your report information on adaptations discussed with you during your assessment and also supply the contact details for the adaptations engineers in your local area that can make the modifications to your vehicle if required.
